This is AdWhirl Mobile Server v2.3.0.

You will need an Amazon AWS account to run this.

Running an AMI is not entirely too difficult, but is also not the most trivial task. You should probably read this guide through before executing any of the steps.

If you aren't familiar with AWS, you might want to refer to Amazon's Getting Started Guide (http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonEC2/gsg/2006-10-01/).

Build/Deploy Steps:
These steps assume you already have the EC2 tools set up. If not, follow the steps in Amazon's guide (http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonEC2/gsg/2006-10-01/setting-up-your-tools.html).

The steps also assume that you're using some *nix-based system. If not, you'll probably need to change the commands slightly to match the syntax appropriate for your OS.

Get the AMI ID of the latest version from the Google Code project site (http://code.google.com/p/adwhirl/).

Generate a key pair, so you can log in to the AMI.
`ec2-add-keypair adwhirl-keypair`
Save the key to file, including the --BEGIN-- and --END-- lines.

NOTE: After you start an instance with the next command, Amazon will start billing you.

Run an instance of the latest AdWhirl AMI.
`ec2-run-instances <ami-XXXXXXXX> -k adwhirl-keypair`

You can now check on the status of your instance. This will also give you the instance's DNS name.
`ec2-describe-instances <i-YYYYYYYY>`

You'll need to authorize SSH and HTTP traffic for the instance. Port 8080 is needed for the configuration website.
`ec2-authorize default -p 22`
`ec2-authorize default -p 80`
`ec2-authorize default -p 8080`

Login to the instance as the root user.
`ssh -i <keyfile> root@domU-AA-AA-AA-AA-AA-AA.ZZZZ.compute.amazonaws.com`

You should now be logged in, and can start editing the stock AdWhirl AMI.

NOTE: I highly suggest that you run GNU Screen and work inside it, although it is entirely optional. 

At this point you should take a break from the server and set up the configuration website.
`cd ~/adwhirl-servers-website`
Follow the instructions in the website README, and then come back here when you've finished.

Now that you've finished with the website, move into the server directory so we can make some edits.
`cd ~/adwhirl-servers-mobile`

You'll need to change the utility class and change the server location, include your AWS keys, and any other specific configuration you desire.
Emacs, vim, nano, ed, etc. are all installed on the instance; feel free to use your editor of choice.
`emacs src/util/AdWhirlUtil.java`

Build the new distribution, cleaning first to be safe.
`ant clean`
`ant dist`

You'll need to make the logs directory.
`mkdir /mnt/adwhirl`

Now you will have a jar that you can start the services. Start it up. It you plan on serving a lot of traffic, you might want a larger heap size.
`java -Xmx512m -cp dist/adwhirl.jar Invoker`

The adwhirl server stores partial aggregate stats in a tempory table in SDB. You'll need to run the stats daemon to consolidate them.
`java -cp dist/adwhirl.jar Daemon`

And you're up and running!

That's not all though :-). If you want to save any changes to the current instance, you'll need to re-bundle it.

First off, you'll want to kill any running services or processes that aren't vital to the machine.
`killall -9 java`
`service httpd stop`
`service memcached stop`
`service postfix stop`

Now, from your local machine, you'll need to copy your private key and X.509 certificate to the instance. 
`scp -i <keyfile> pk-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.pem cert-YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.pem root@domU-AA-AA-AA-AA-AA-AA.ZZZZ.compute.amazonaws.com:`

If you've made all your changes then you're ready to create a new image containing them. Replace ZZZZZZZZZZZZ with your AWS Account ID (not your AWS key).
`ec2-bundle-vol -d /mnt -k ~/pk-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.pem -c ~/cert-YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.pem -u ZZZZZZZZZZZZ`

Check that everything is finished and you now have an AMI manifest.
`ls -l /mnt/image.*`

Upload it to S3.
`ec2-upload-bundle -b <your-s3-bucket> -m /mnt/image.manifest.xml -a <aws-access-key-id> -s <aws-secret-access-key>`

From your local machine, register the AMI.
`ec2-register <your-s3-bucket>/image.manifest.xml`

Now you can spin up instances of your new AMI!

You don't need to go any further, but if you want to set up elastic load balancing, read on!

The first thing is to get the Elastic Load Balancer tools (from http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=2536&categoryID=88).

Amazon's guide for the tools is available as well (http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/ElasticLoadBalancing/2009-05-15/DeveloperGuide/).

Now create a new load balancer. Make sure your availability zones are the same as the zones your instances are in. The server runs on port 80, and the configuration website on 8080.
`elb-create-lb  AdWhirlLB --headers --listener "lb-port=80,instance-port=80,protocol=HTTP" --listener "lb-port=8080,instance-port=8080,protocol=HTTP" --availability-zones us-east-1a`

The previous command will return the DNS name of your load balancer. You'll probably want to add this as a target to a CNAME entry somewhere in your DNS record.

Add a health checker, to make sure that your instances are up and running correctly. Feel free to change the timeouts.
`elb-configure-healthcheck AdWhirlLB  --headers --target "HTTP:80/ping" --interval 30 --timeout 3 --unhealthy-threshold 2 --healthy-threshold 2`

Register your instance(s) with the load balancer.
`elb-register-instances-with-lb  AdWhirlLB  --headers --instances i-XXXXXXXX,i-YYYYYYYY`

If everything went well, traffic going to the load balancer should now be automatically split between your running instances.

At some point you will want to terminate the instance and stop being billed.
`ec2-terminate-instances <i-YYYYYYYY>` 

Alternatively, if you are already on the AMI, you can just shut it down.
`shutdown -h now`
